This basic introduction to physical geography focuses on the nature and dynamics of the earth system including the atmosphere, hydrosphere, solid earth, and biosphere, the interactions among these components, and significance for society. Following the vision of its founder, Alexander von Humboldt, geography is seen as the study of the earth system: its components, as represented by the four geospheres, and their interactions. The approach emphasizes the understanding and analysis of structure and process.
