• Earthquakes -- most are explained by plate tectonics
  Mitigation? blend of earthquake history and building codes
• volcanos -- global occurrence mostly explained by plate tectonics
  mitigation? excellent for local hazards, nothing we can do (?) for global hazards
• impacts -- extra-terrestrial source
  mitigation? if we can them coming, and the technology & money to go into space, we might deflect the object
• climate -- "exists" due to uneven heating of Earth & motion in the atmosphere & oceans
  Beyond those basics, it gets complicated rather quickly
  Your book lists a multiplicity of causes & controls on climate variations -- how can we ever understand how it works, much less what the human influence is?
  Will this problem yield to traditional scientific investigation?
