Ohio-Penn EQ of Sept 25, 1998: Seismograms
OhioSeis & other nearby stations
- Seismogram posted by COW, College of Wooster
Epicentral distance is about 140 km, note that S wave follows closely behind P wave
This digital station is quite close to the epicenter!
-
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, even closer to the epicenter (about 50 km)! note the time correction
-
University of Toledo, Includes pictures of seismograms and some analysis of felt motions in Toledo, OH.
-
State Univ. of New York, Binghamton. In addition to the USNSN station there (BINY), they run a digital three-component long-period system (BNY) at a distance of approximately 380 km. This image from their web-site shows all three-components. Note that the Rayleigh-type surface waves appear on the Z and East components, while the Love-type surface waves appear on the North component (back azimuth is 260 deg.)
-
Yale University, a three-component record of an instrument run in collaboration with Boston College
- There is an analog seismogram recorded at The Cleveland Museum of Natural History (provided by B. Bartolotti).
- There is an interesting barograph record provided by G. Yarbeuet at Rice Ave. Middle School in Girard, PA.
MichSeis
- Seismogram (AAMN) that shows P, S, & surface waves
- Detail of P wave arrival at AAMN, "up" first motion
- The UPseis station at Houghton MI (Michigan Tech. Univ.) did record the event, but with the large distance (more than 800 km away from epicenter) and high local storm noise, the earthquake is just barely seen.
-
IRIS-"QuakeView". This MichSeis service (or go back to MichSeis main page, find and click on QuakeView) displays all the global seismograms available through IRIS DMC Spyder. Note that the OhioPenn event shows up as a few high-frequency wiggles on the background noise at these faraway stations, but the dynamic range of the IRIS instruments may preserve a usuable signal for those willing to filter the seismograms (also available for donwloading in QuakeView).

Saint Louis University -- Coop. Broad-band Network
- This network operates high-quality broad-band instruments at sites scattered about the mid-continent region. Their web-site shows drum-like images of records for each day. They have records from BLO, the station in Bloomington, IN, operated in conjunction with the University of Indiana.
