MARGINS workshop on the modeling of subduction zone dynamics and thermal structure

University of Michigan

October 4-6, 2002

Introduction

This workshop will focus on the modeling of subduction zones, with particular focus on their dynamics and thermal structure. Although modeling has become an essential complement to observational and experimental approaches, major obstacles exist on the road to full integration of accurate and consistent modeling into subduction zone research. This workshop will address some of the major tasks the modeling community faces, which includes benchmarking and evaluation of existing numerical approaches, guiding the use of increased computer power and improved numerical techniques, and furthering the integration of numerical modeling into experimental and observational studies.

The workshop is intended to be collaborative and hands-on, with a target audience for this workshop consists of subduction zone modelers and experts from observational and experimental disciplines. Goals we wish to achieve include: 1) a numerical benchmark; 2) an overview of technical improvements and limitations; 3) a survey of the parameters that are fundamental in controlling the dynamics of the slab-wedge environment; 4) in-depth discussion on integrating modeling in subduction zone research.

The meeting will have a minimal amount of scheduled talks to allow for optimal discussion. Participants can contribute papers through the poster sessions which will be held Friday and Saturday afternoon.
