GEOLOGICAL SCIENCES
This concentration program provides both breadth and depth across all sub-disciplines within the earth sciences. It is designed to provide students with the most choices for what can be done with their undergraduate degree. For example, this program prepares students for graduate work in any sub-discipline in the earth sciences. It also grooms students for immediate employment in the environmental or oil industries.
EARTH SCIENCES
This concentration program is the most flexible of all options, and is an excellent degree for those who want to do a double concentration (e.g., economics and earth science, physics and earth science, etc.). It is also an excellent program for those students who do not necessarily want to become professional geologists, but would like to have a broad, geological background as they pursue careers in teaching, business, law, etc.
ENVIRONMENTAL GEOSCIENCES
This concentration program is focused on the environmental aspects of earth sciences, and grooms students for immediate entry into jobs with an environmental consulting firm. It also provides a rigorous preparation for graduate work in environmental geosciences. Many students choose this degree program as preparation for law school or business school, because issues relating to the environment play an ever-increasing role in our economy and laws.
OCEANOGRAPHY
This concentration program takes advantage of the oceanography research program here at the University of Michigan, even though we are not located on the coast. It is a rigorous degree program that primarily prepares students for graduate work in various sub-disciplines within oceanography, including marine geology, marine geophysics, marine geochemistry, and marine biology/paleobiology.
