EAGL is a geochemical lab in the Department of Geological Sciences at the
University of Michigan that specializes in elemental determination of surface and
groundwaters. The laboratory provides analytical support for researchers both university-wide
and from universities and facilities around the world. The laboratory also routinely tests
waters from a variety of sources including rivers, streams, lakes, ponds and wells, as well as
drinking water. Furthermore, the laboratory can analyze a variety of soils and sediments for
elemental composition. Most of the analyses performed at EAGL are examining the major and minor
components in waters that have weathered Michigan soils. These involve measuring cations such as
sodium, calcium, magnesium, aluminum, and iron, and anions such as chloride, sulfate, carbonate
and nitrate. Instrumentation includes: ICP-OES, gas and ion chromatographs, and wet chemical
analysis systems for measurement of trace and minor element concentrations.
