Report on Special Symposium D-4:
"Terrestrial Heat Flow, Hot Spots, Mantle Plumes, and the Thermal
Structure of the Lithosphere"
12-13 August, 1996, Beijing (China)
Technical Report
Symposium D-4 was held at the 30th International Geological
Congress. The poster session took place on Monday, 12 August
while the two oral sessions were held on Tuesday, 13 August. The
oral sessions assembled 18 speakers, among them 6 from China.
Convenors were L. Rybach (ETH Zurich) and Shen Xian-jie (Academia
Sinica, Beijing). IHFC sponsored D-4 (through IASPEI) with a
total of US$2,000.
Scientific Report
D-4 highlighted the Symposium subject and scope from different
perspectives. Many new local heat flow density data sets were
presented and regional surveys especially from Europe and
Eastern/Southeastern Asia revealed the salient lithospheric
features. It became evident that the analysis of the global heat
flow data set by inversion techniques clearly indicates a long-
term global warming trend which begun ca. 100,000 years ago. A
unified concept of superplumes was also presented, deriving the
plumes from the core/mantle boundary and triggering their
simultaneous rise at +/- regular (20Ma) episodic intervals.

Addendum to IHFC Minutes August 21, 1997
Date: Thu, 4 Sep 1997 16:02:15 -0700
From: Trevor Lewis
The following report submitted by H.N. Pollack for the Paleoclimate Database
Working Group was inadvertently left out of the Minutes of the IHFC Business
Meeting held Aug. 21, 1997, in Thessaloniki, Greece, and should be added to
the minutes, item 6 b).
Trevor Lewis
IHFC Secretary
Report of the IHFC Working Group "Global Database of Borehole Temperatures
for Climate Reconstructions", Henry N. Pollack, Chairman
IHFC Meeting in Thessaloniki, Greece, August 1997
This database working group was established in 1991 at the Vienna IUGG and the
Bechyne meeting that followed shortly thereafter. There are three principal
components of the database: (1) Observations from field surveys, including
borehole temperatures, thermophysical properties and site descriptions; (2) a
comprehensive index of publications with references to interpretations of
relevant datasets, and (3) a directory of geothermal researchers active in the
paleoclimate field. The most labor intensive part of this effort has been in
acquiring the field observations from the various archives, publications, and
field notebooks of researchers around the globe. The database now contains
observations from more than 1,000 boreholes on six continents, but not all
will ultimately prove suitable for analysis in terms of paleoclimate, because
of such reasons as an unsuitable depth range of data, too great a depth
interval between measurements, hydrological perturbations, inadequate
information on thermophysical properties, etc. Quality control measures
stringently and uniformly applied will likely reduce the number of boreholes
amenable to analysis to about 500. Data presently in the database represent
the following countries: Albania, Australia, Belarus, Botswana, Brazil,
Canada, China, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, India,
Ireland, Italy, Namibia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovak Republic,
Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, South Africa, Tanzania, Ukraine, USA, Zambia,
Zimbabwe. Important additional data exist in Canada, China, Denmark, France,
Germany, India, Japan, Norway, Russia, Sweden, UK, and USA, and efforts
continue to be made to acquire these data. Principal funding for the data
collection effort has been through the Czech-USA Cooperative Science Program
and the U.S. National Science Foundation. The Database Manager is Dr. Shaopeng
Huang of China, currently based in the USA. An initial version of the database
will be placed on the World Wide Web sometime in the coming year, and also
submitted to the World Data Center A for open distribution.

WORKSHOP
on "Past Climate Change Inferred From The Analyses Of The Underground
Temperature Field"
(IGCP Project No. 428)
in Sinaia (Romania) ; March 14-17, 1999.
INVITATION
The Scientific Committee and the Local Organizing Committee, in
collaboration with the Geological Institute of Romania, extend a cordial
invitation to all colleagues interested in the IGCP Project No. 428
"Past Climate Change Inferred from the Analyses of the Underground
Temperature Field".
Having a regional character, the Workshop is focused mainly
on the problems of reconstruction of the past climate changes in the
the southern, eastern and south-eastern Europe. However, results
of other geographical areas will be in no case excluded. The
principal objectives of the Workshop are:
- to exchange information and experience among specialists;
- to spread knowledge to wider group of heat flow researchers;
- to bring together scientists interested in topics of the IGCP
Project No. 428 for discussion of recent achievements,
developments and problems;
- to provide an overview of the researches actually performed.
of the Underground Temperature Field".
CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS
Topics which will be discussed during the Workshop include:
1) Improvement of already existing results of borehole x climate
inversion.
2) Establishment of new relations with other paleoclimatologists
in respective countries and exchange of data and experience.
Cross-correlation of various proxy records with instrumental
data. Assess the strengths and weaknesses of proxies as
estimators of past climate variability.
3) Comparison of past climate reconstruction of past one-two
millennia, with presence of the most recent global warming (last
50-100 years) obtained from geothermal data with results from
various proxies.
4) Correlation studies of obtained recent GSTHs (climate warming)
with the long-term meteorological series.
5) To continue in collecting all suitable temperature-depth
profiles and their inversion into ground surface temperature
histories (GSTHs), special attention to be paid to obtain
temperature-versus-depth records from so far "uncovered" areas
6) Establishment of regional database of GSTHs for south-eastern
Europe.
7) Results of shallow borehole (30-50 m) data for continuous
monitoring of the temperature regime in shallow underground.
8) Quantitative assessments of the regional trends of major
climate changes of past couple hundred years in selected areas.
9) Distinguish the potential contribution of the human activities
(industrialisation and urbanisation, pollution, green-house
effect, etc.)
10) Joint interpretation of obtained GST-data with historical,
instrumental and proxy information.
GENERAL INFORMATION, APPLICATION AND DEAD-LINES
Registration fee is expected to be of about USD 50. The Local
